I actually eat pizza every day (sometimes from freezer)

"I'm starving too. What's cheap? Let's get a slice."
"Okay where?"
"What's that famous place a block from here. West Village. We went there once."
"Two Boots? Or Ray's?"
"I don't know - the really famous place on the corner."
"They're both on a corner. Did it have huge, floppy slices or fancy, complicated ones?"
"Huge, floppy ones."
"Ray's."
"Wait, fancy, complicated slices?"
"Yeah, Two Boots. It's good."
"K, let's go there.

Anti-passover

Friend and I like to cook, and having just been to costco, had a marinated pork roast on our hands. I threw in a grilled onion and canelli bean salad, roasted potaoes with herbs and olive oil, and garlic dill cheese bread (thanks, mom). Then we sat around and got drunk (with several late night trips to the 24 wine store) and played word games and charades. I think the evening peaked when someone mimed "Moby Dick reading Moby Dick" and we got it in less than a minute.

Someone needs more B12. Or something.

I can't buy vegetables because I am never home and they will rot before I eat them, so my main source of vitamins is vegan buffet with guy friends. And by that I mean it's happened twice in the past week. And at the one today, there was this woman sitting alone at the next table. My age-ish, put together but not in a fashionable way, lean but solid, eatin alone all confident-like while texting on her iPhone. I noticed her because she is what I hope I look like from the outside.

Hahaha - okay, and then she turned to my friend and I and asked, "Hey, do you guys know those microwaveable poaching cups?"
Friend: "No."
Me: "Um, maybe - are they sort of shallow little plastic cups?"
Her: "Yeah, yeah."
Me: "Okay."
Her: "Right: How do you spell poaching?"

So hungry today

How hungry were you?

So hungry I had to leave in the middle of critical theory class and get a hotdog from the Sabrett's on the corner, stand there on the street and eat it, and then go back.

This, by the way, is actually the reason people blog

I got innundated with compliments this week. Mnh! that feels good. Especially when someone walks over to you just to drop that info bomb, then walks away.

Imma write them down, so that I have something to read while I eat this extra pan of tiramisu that I made.

"He said he thinks you're so beautiful he can't concentrate in class."

"I'm really enjoying the feminist reading seminar."

"That was a good question you asked."

"I like your hair like that."

"By the way, your presentation was really great."

"You made this?"

Thanksgiving

Spent eating and drinking and laughing in the most grown-up apartment of all of my friends in New York. Walls! Art! Silverware! In a solid, old Brooklyn building, too. You can feel that generations of families lived in those apartments.

Then I took the N train home with a surprising number of people, for 2 am.

Jesus Christ, all I talk about is real estate and the subway.

Definitely something about boys feeding me

One time in high school I had this really bad head cold and was feeling kind of miserable on account of it, and for some reason - I don't remember why - none of my girlfriends were around (they were off on some extra-curricular activity that I didn't sign up for?). Anyway, my friend so-and-so, whom I knew but never really hung out with, in this endearingly understated way, took me into town on his moped and bought me lunch at this little café. We had sandwiches, and we didn't talk much, and afterwards we went back to mostly not knowing each other. It is all the more fond in my memory because it was so random.

This week or last - I don't remember which because I've had this cold forever - some similarly adorably unsolicited thing like this happened two days in a row. One day I had exactly an hour to kill, and no will to buy food even though hungry, and friend happened upon me with two big take-out containers of leftovers, which we ate in an empty classroom. The very next day another friend gave me exactly half a black-and-white cookie, transversally still half black and half white, and there you have the point of this post. That's a New York thing, right? Tick. Kind of like an iced doughnut in cookie form, by the way.

It's not all drinks and debauch

Wake up (730), shower and go to work, hit the grocery store (1245), get home, watch y&r, read for class, turn on crockpot (200), go to class, come home (615), eat dinner, do dishes, go to class, come home (1100).

In conclusion, New York is a land of contrasts.

Woke up at 2:00 pm today, either hung over or still drunk, and raced to work. I managed to squeeze a few hours out of the business day, and then battle the greasy rails and the steaming sewer grates and the slow-moving, polyestered behinds and the brumes of cigarette smoke and make it back to my clean, quiet hovel where I crank up the AC and lie on clean sheets and make people deliver food to my door.

I found this by accident but it turns out it's a famous artist who went to the New School.

Krolewskie Jadlo

The other day in the Polish restaurant, I got a Polish menu instead of an English one (btw, you have to go to this place - two mediaeval knights' armour suits standing guard outside the door and $8.00 for plate with pierogies, kielbassa, cabbage rolls and potato pancakes, with beet salad, cabbage salad and two cold water pickles). And today in the grocery store a woman started trying to ask me about the price of garlic in Polish. Oh, and when I went to the bakery the woman tried to serve me in Polish.

I mean, sure I *am* Polish - in that Western Ukraine sort of way - but come on now. Am I that moon-faced? Am I that cankled?

P.S. If that seems evil, I just found their website for this pic, and the front page includes the line "I have always dreamt about opening a real polish restaurant, a restaurant that Polish people would not be ashamed of..."

Yesterday I went here

It's a factory in the neighbourhood that makes all the lox you see in the grocery stores. Acme. On Friday mornings (that seems right in the Polish neighbourhood, huh?), they sell direct off the line to walk-in customers. The woman who helped us kept generously slicing off and handing us samples with her wet, fishy rubber gloves. You actually can tell the difference between the wild and the farmed. When it came time to buy, she cut us off a half-pound sized chunk like we asked, then threw the other half in for us as well.

Look, the NYTimes made a video about the place.

End of Weak

Poured rain all day and all night, got no reading done, but I picked up and went to the potluck on the Upper West Side anyway and Grace was her hilarious best and I brought a $20 fruit salad and that woman was outrageously endearing. My situation is dire, but there is always something more and always something next in this city and right now it's all better. I love to you, New York. Good night.

Easter

I ate Easter twice yesterday, first brunch at Ulysses in the Financial District, where your $20 includes a bloody mary or mimosa, coffee, and as many trips to the bacon, french toast, custom omelette, croissants, cakes, fresh fruit and cream, smoked salmon and raw oysters as you can fit in.

Then we kicked it in Bushwick, which I have mentioned many times before is the hispanic neighbourhood where they hate you white people, and with good reason because your presence means their rent is about to triple, and had ham and scalloped potatoes and salad and hard boiled eggs. Now, when a pulsing blast of Spanish music goes driving by on the street outside, guess what kind of car that is. Nova? Souped-up Civic? No, fool it's an Astro minivan. You know, cuz you can fit your whole crew in there. And you can get them at auction for like, $800.

Then we sat around and used Google Maps to show each other where we lost our respective virginities. New party game!

Next year in Jerusalem, kids

It's Passover, so I just had seder, obvs. I don't know whether that needs an article or not. A seder? Wait - did seder?

My friend was feeling homesick and nostalgic (oh, and Jewish), so invited a couple of us non-Jews over, and really went all out. I helped with the Charoset and washed the parsley for the Karpas. Look it up, Catholics. She walked us through the Cliff notes version of the holiday - reciting the Hebrew phrases and telling us when to drink our Manischewitz. We were delightfully irreverent, I am sure. Actually, there was blasphemy all around: at one point someone asked an obvious question, and she totally ingenuously said "Does the pope shit in the woods?" We all burst out laughing, and then other friend said that would actually make a great New Yorker cartoon - the pope shitting in the woods, and a bear walks up to him wearing a funny hat. Write your own caption.

Mm

Tonight I gave a hobo in the ATM vestibule some change and he threw it back at me, yelling "What will this get me? Fucking candy?" So I picked it up again and went and bought myself a latté and some tomato bocconcini salad.

Spring Breakistan

Today was a day of two Mexican restaurants. Dos Caminos is on Park Avenue, semi-upscale - this is the place with the guacamole truck - packed for lunch at 2, with mood lighting and $12 margaritas and "plantain empanadas with chipotle aioli" and well-dressed business people sitting on parsons chairs pulled up to marble tables.

Other place (I'm not sure the name, if it has one, neither is Google) plays Mexican soap operas on the lofted tv - until the guy with a dozen heavy gold chains throws a dollar in the all-Spanish jukebox - sells $3 beer, serves the local Central American immigrant population $4.50 burritos and tostadas at formica tables.

[insert witty observation here]

And then I was reminded of how fulllll I would get when the family and I would eat like this three times a day last summer in the 110 degree heat in Mexico. Except there was more alcohol involved.

The family that is now eating and drinking their way across the south of France in an Alfa Romeo without me.

Holy shit, I can hardly hit "post", that picture is so funny...
